Character Matters

It has been said that "You are what you are when you are alone".  Truer words have never been spoken.  Character starts at the core of who you are.  Far too many people in positions of leadership either try to hide their true character to come across as someone whom they are not or they suffer from self-deception and will not admit to themselves the character flaws that are holding them back.

In their great book Leadership and Self-Deception, the writers at the Arbinger Institute wrote:

“Self-deception ... blinds us to the true causes of problems, and once we’re blind, all the “solutions” we can think of will actually make matters worse.”

Brady and Woodward take it a step further:

"...people will follow a leader only as far as they feel they can trust him [or her].  People will not follow a leader they can't trust."

And that trust is born in the character of the leader.  Character is about doing what is right regardless of the personal cost.  Leaders with character will ALWAYS do what is right, not what is expedient or what is popular.

Remember, you are what you are when you are alone.  Always do the right thing!
