Great Leaders Don't Try To Do It Alone

One of the greatest pitfalls to effective leadership is getting trapped in the mindset that if you want it done right you have to do it yourself.  This simply is not true.  The effective leader will use their influence and relationships to inspire others to get the job done, and get the job done right.

In order to inspire others, you have to take the time to understand people and their different natures.  In her classic book Personality Plus, Florence Littauer writes:

“We were all born with our own set of strengths and weaknesses, and no magic formula works wonders for all of us. Until we recognize our uniqueness, we can’t understand how people can sit in the same seminar with the same speaker for the same amount of time and all achieve different degrees of success.”

Understanding what motivates and inspires different people is key to effective leadership.  This takes time, study, and patience.  Mistakes will be made, but each mistake can serve as a valuable lesson on the road to understanding people and thus getting into a position where you can lead, influence, and inspire them to effectiveness and even greatness.
